How can the sound insulation of steel-framed homes be improved?

In a super high-rise Steel Structure apartment in Shenzhen, the sound pressure level of floor impact has been reduced to below 45dB; in a Loft project in Hongqiao Business District of Shanghai, the wall with composite sound insulation system realizes 52dB of airborne sound insulation; and in a demonstration community in Xiong'an New District, the indoor background noise is stabilized within 30dB by means of the intelligent sound field regulating and controlling technology. These practices signify that the sound insulation technology of steel structure residential buildings has evolved from passive noise reduction to active acoustic design.


I. Optimization of structural system sound insulation design

Elastic connection technology to block the sound bridge Adopting EPDM rubber vibration isolation pads (thickness ≥8mm) to isolate the steel beams and floor slabs, the measurement of a project shows that it can reduce the impact sound by 12dB. 50mm elastic pads are set between the shear wall and the steel frame of a steel structure residence in Hangzhou, which can increase the attenuation of the structural sound transmission to 28dB.


Cavity resonance control technology Optimize the size of the wall cavity through BIM acoustic simulation, and move the resonance frequency out of the sensitive zone of the human ear (100-3150Hz). The 600mm cavity wall of an experimental house, together with gradient density filling, improves the sound insulation of 125Hz low frequency by 8dB.


II. Enclosure sound insulation upgrade

Five-layer composite wall system 1.2mm galvanized steel plate (outside) + 15mm calcium silicate board + 80mm centrifugal glass wool (32kg/m³) + 15mm gypsum board + 3mm sound insulation felt. Measured airborne sound insulation amounted to 62dB, 15dB higher than that of traditional light steel keel walls. after application in a project in Beijing, the indoor speech intelligibility index increased to 0.82.


Gradient Density Filling Technology Filling polyester fiber cotton (20kg/m³) + rock wool (80kg/m³) + polyurethane foam (45kg/m³) in layers within 120mm wall, the average sound insulation in 100-5000Hz band is increased by 9dB. this program is used in a musician's residence in Chengdu, achieving indoor background noise ≤ 28dB.
